What is Zen?
Go ask the wall.- a Zen mondo
I’ve heard Zen described by a particular lay person as “just a bunch of monks sitting around and having pointless, nonsense conversations”. In a way, I suppose that’s true. Go ask the wall….
Interestingly, however, I find it amusing that intellectual discussions, even those based in logic, are as equally absurd when you get down to it. Much of what we claim to know is based on supposition and in no way reflects nature. Sure, the scientist and the intellectual observe, which would be enough if left at that– but when they extend that observation into hypothetical explanations, the intellectual and the scientist are talking in absurdities.
Words cannot adequately describe any phenomenon. It’s much better to forget the words and shout a string of improvised guttural noises. Chances are you are closer to the nature of the thing or event you are trying to describe, as long as the guttural noises are non-contrived. Once you contrive to make guttural noises, then you’re worse than the intellectual trying to explain the unknown with words, and a charlatan to boot.
It’s best to leave it all alone and not think about it — but if I don’t follow my own advice, then why should you?
Off to bed with me. The navel needs gazing.
